Durham County Council is responsible for making the decision on all the planning applications received from the Belmont Parish area. Part of that responsibility involves consulting residents and other interested parties on planning proposals and taking these views into account when reaching a decision.
If you have any views to express on any application that may affect you then you should raise these directly with the County Council as it is the decision making body.
You can view and comment on planning applications via the Durham County Council website, using the planning application number. If you do not have the application number then you can either view the weekly planning list or use the various search facilities on the site. You are also able to leave comment on individual applications depending upon the stage reached in the decision making process.
As a publicly elected body Belmont Parish Council makes representation to the County Council on behalf of the community and council members who will consider planning proposals which could have major significance to the area. This normally takes place at the at the monthly council meeting where the Parish Council will come to a decision on whether to support, object to or offer no objections to a proposal, having taken into account the information it has at the time of its decision.
As a small local council Belmont Parish Council does not employ professional planning staff and will reach a view on a proposal on the basis of its experience. The County Council does employ professional planning staff as it has the duty to decide the application and require professional guidance to meet its responsibilities. In deciding applications the County Council considers all material planning considerations including the National Planning Policy Framework and County Planning Policy such as the County Durham Plan.
Although Belmont Parish Council cannot make decisions on planning applications residents are always welcome to speak at our monthly meetings or contact one of our Councillors directly about any planning concerns. Monthly meetings take place at 6.30pm on the first Thursday of every month at Belmont Community Centre.
